After the rain
The storm passed, the sun came out, and the garden was transformed. Puddles glittered everywhere: big ones, small ones, and one enormous one by the garden shed that reflected the whole sky. Mac stood on the porch, surveyed the watery landscape, and felt a thrill of possibility. This was not a garden anymore. This was an arena.
The first jump
Mac approached the smallest puddle cautiously. He touched it with one paw, watched the ripples, and then jumped over it. It was easy. He jumped back. Also easy. He looked at the bigger puddle. He backed up, took a running start, and sailed over it, landing with a splash that soaked his belly. Mac stood in the puddle, dripping, and his tail wagged so hard he nearly fell over. This was the best thing ever.
Championship rules
Mac established the Puddle Jump Championship on the spot. Event one: the long jump, for distance. Event two: the splash jump, for biggest splash. Event three: the precision landing, for style. Buddy agreed to judge. Luna volunteered for the splash event. Ahmad was appointed official towel holder. The championship was underway.
The long jump
Mac backed up to the fence, ran full speed, and launched himself over the big puddle. He cleared it completely, landing on the far side with his ears flying. Buddy measured the jump with his nose and declared it excellent. Luna tried next, took a shorter run-up, and landed in the middle with a magnificent splash. Different technique, same joy.
The splash event
The splash event was Luna’s specialty. She ran into the deepest puddle at full speed and stopped dead, sending a wave in every direction. Water flew. Buddy, judging from what he thought was a safe distance, got soaked. Mac applauded by barking. Ahmad, the towel holder, was already reaching for the towels. Luna stood in the puddle, water dripping off her chin, looking extremely proud.
The muddy puddle
There was one puddle that was more mud than water, brown and thick. The puppies looked at it. They looked at each other. They looked at Ahmad. Ahmad said no. The puppies looked at the puddle again. In the end, only Mac’s paw went in, just one paw, just to test it. The paw came out brown. Mac looked at the paw. Then he put the other three paws in too. Some temptations are irresistible.
Results and awards
Buddy announced the results: Mac won the long jump, Luna won the splash event, and they tied for style. The prize was extra treats and a warm towel dry. As Ahmad toweled them off, the puppies leaned into the warmth, tired and happy. The puddles were already shrinking in the sun, but the championship would live forever in their memories.
Field notes
Puddle jumping is joyful, but keep it safe. Avoid puddles near roads where water may contain oil or chemicals, rinse muddy paws afterwards, and dry your puppy thoroughly. A championship can be held in any garden after any rain.
