Storytime
Every evening, Ahmad read for half an hour before bed. Buddy had always liked this time: the house was quiet, the lamp was warm, and Ahmad’s voice was soothing. But one evening, Buddy did something new. Instead of sleeping on the rug, he climbed onto the sofa, rested his chin on Ahmad’s knee, and looked at the book. He was going to pay attention this time.
The first book
The book was about a dog who had adventures. Buddy listened intently, his ears moving with the story. When the dog in the book barked, Buddy’s ears perked. When the dog ran, Buddy’s tail thumped. When Ahmad turned the page, Buddy sniffed it. He did not understand the words, but he understood the rhythm, the excitement, the calm. Storytime was wonderful.
Club formation
The next evening, Buddy brought Luna to storytime. The evening after that, Mac came too, carrying his toy mouse for comfort. Ahmad declared them the Evening Reading Club, with three rules: everyone must be comfortable, no chewing the book, and anyone who falls asleep is not mocked. The club met every night at the same time, in the same spot, and it was the highlight of Buddy’s day.
Favorite stories
Buddy developed preferences. He liked adventure stories best, especially ones with running. He was less keen on sad parts, during which he would nudge Ahmad’s hand for reassurance. Luna liked stories with other animals. Mac fell asleep during every story, regardless of genre, but he always woke up for the end, as if he had been listening all along. The club respected all reading styles.
The library incident
Ahmad took the club on a field trip to the library, where dogs were allowed in the lobby. Buddy walked in with great dignity, sniffed the air full of book smell, and sat by Ahmad’s chair. A child reading nearby offered Buddy a pat, which he accepted graciously. Luna charmed the librarian. Mac slept under the table. It was the most cultured outing the club had ever had.
Reading to the puppies
One evening, Ahmad had a sore throat, so Buddy decided to return the favor. He picked up his squeaky toy, which was the closest thing to a book he owned, and “read” to Luna and Mac by squeaking it rhythmically. Luna listened politely. Mac fell asleep. Buddy felt he had done a good job. Ahmad, listening from the armchair, agreed that it was a lovely story.
The club continues
The Evening Reading Club is still going strong. They have heard dozens of stories, and Buddy remembers all the best parts, or at least he remembers the feeling of them. Every night, as Ahmad opens the book, three puppies settle in, and the house fills with the quiet magic of a story shared. It is, Buddy thinks, the very best way to end a day.
Field notes
Reading to your dog is a lovely bonding ritual. Dogs find the rhythm of a calm voice soothing, and the routine helps them wind down. Choose a cozy spot, keep sessions relaxed, and let your dog participate in their own way, even if that means snoring through the climax.
